Moonlight Tales
By George Amadi
Owls, far-sighted, on giant Iroko
trees preach,
Remarks, short and sharp, in solos screech;
Early risers, vital needs to cater to at streams,
“All is well,” are told by wild birds via screams.
Used as tooth-brush by jungle inhabitants,
Each love-stick from a sherry tree daily yanks.
Many an infatuated bush-girl on one chews;
Calabash-pots seated on their plaited hair,
With one another gossip then, exchange.
Yummy insects in the kitty, a must for oldies
Who bereft of teeth justice can’t do to meat,
The village beauties medicinal wood set alight
Ensuring steaming vegetable-soup comes alive.
Children tales under the moonlight get told,
Enthralled by one on fiends trapped in a hold;
Though, often got frightened out of their wits,
They’d anything give to be handed scary bits.
